Legacy postpaid vs. prepaid in 2026: same towers, $600 difference — what gives?

SAVE MONEY6 MIN READ

Visible runs on Verizon towers for $25/mo. Mint, Metro and US Mobile run on T-Mobile towers for $25–$50. Cricket runs on AT&T towers. A single postpaid line on those same networks typically costs $50–$110. Over a year, that gap is roughly $420–$720 per line. So what is the extra money actually buying? Three things — and for most people, none of them is coverage.

1. Data priority

On a congested tower, postpaid premium plans get served first. The cheapest prepaid tiers can slow down in a packed stadium or airport at rush hour. This is real, but it's a sometimes-thing, not an everyday one — and it has a cheap fix: premium switch tiers like Visible+ ($35/mo) and US Mobile Premium include priority data and still cost half of postpaid.

2. Perks and financing

Postpaid bundles streaming subscriptions and "free phone" deals paid out as 24–36 months of bill credits. Those credits are a leash: leave early and the remaining phone balance comes due. Price the perks at what you'd actually pay for them, subtract that from the savings, and switching usually still wins by hundreds a year.

3. Support channel

Postpaid gets you stores and phone reps. Online-first carriers use chat and app support — faster for simple things, thinner for complex ones. Consumer Cellular ($60/mo, AT&T towers) is the exception in our catalog, with US-based phone support as its whole pitch.

Who should NOT switch to the cheapest plan

  • Heavy hotspot users whose work depends on tethering beyond the hotspot caps on budget tiers (Mint's is 20GB; Visible's base hotspot is speed-capped at 5 Mbps, not GB-capped) — look at premium switch tiers instead of the $25 plans.
  • Anyone mid-way through device bill credits with a large remaining balance — do the payoff math first; sometimes waiting out the credits wins.
  • People who genuinely use the bundled perks daily and roam internationally every month on postpaid-included roaming — compare Google Fi and Visible+ before assuming prepaid can't match it.
