Family switch playbook: moving 4 lines without a weekend of chaos

FAMILIES7 MIN READ

Porting one line takes 15 minutes. Porting four lines badly can eat a weekend — usually because all four were moved at once, in the wrong order, the night before a school day. Do it in this order instead.

1. Test with the least-used line first

Port the line nobody depends on — a spare, a tablet line, the teenager's second phone — and live on the new carrier for two or three days. You'll learn the real coverage at home, school and work, plus how the new carrier's app and eSIM flow feel, before anyone important depends on it.

2. Port the account holder's line last

On the old carrier, the account holder's line is the master key: transfer PINs are generated from the account, and some carriers only let the Primary Account Holder create them. Keep that line on the old carrier until every other line has landed, then move it and let the old account close.

3. Stagger the eSIMs

One line per evening is plenty. Each port: generate a fresh transfer PIN if the old one is near expiry (AT&T PINs last ~4 days, T-Mobile ~7), activate, test call/text/data with Wi-Fi off, done. If one port stalls on a name or ZIP mismatch, only one family member is inconvenienced — and you know exactly which detail to fix for the rest.

4. Keep the safety net up

Because every number stays the same, bank codes, school apps, medical portals and kids' 2FA keep working — they follow the number, not the carrier. Still, keep one line active on the old carrier until all ports confirm, so the family is never fully cut over to an untested network.

The family pricing that makes it worth it

From our catalog: Cricket Supreme Unlimited is 4 lines for $130 total on AT&T towers; Metro Unlimited 5G Data is also 4 for $120 on T-Mobile towers; Google Fi Unlimited Essentials drops to $30/line for 2 lines; Red Pocket adds lines at $20 each and Consumer Cellular at $20 each. The plan finder applies this family pricing automatically when you set your line count — enter your current family bill and see the honest total. Leaving AT&T or T-Mobile as a family? Those guides cover the carrier-specific PIN and timing details.
