How to switch from Tracfone or Straight Talk and save — the complete guide
Tracfone and Straight Talk are Verizon-owned prepaid brands built around store-bought refill cards — which is exactly why they're not in our plan catalog: every carrier we list sells and activates fully online. The switch is worth it: most Tracfone-family lines today run on Verizon towers, and Visible sells that same network unlimited for $25/mo with eSIM activation from your couch, while Total Wireless and US Mobile add family pricing Tracfone never offered. The catch is that Tracfone-family ports are the most error-prone in the industry — because the "account number" isn't what you think it is. Get the three details in Step 3 right and the rest is routine.
Why switching off Tracfone / Straight Talk saves money
- Same towers, modern pricing. Since Verizon bought Tracfone, its brands (Tracfone, Straight Talk, Total Wireless, Page Plus) run on Verizon's network. Visible ($25 unlimited) and Total Wireless ($35 unlimited with AutoPay, 10GB hotspot, 5-year price lock) sell that network online-first — no refill cards, no store runs, no service-end-date juggling.
- Real family plans. Tracfone-family pricing is per-line, per-card. Catalog carriers add lines at published rates (Red Pocket +$20/line, Consumer Cellular +$20/line, Google Fi $30/line for 2).
- Your data stops expiring. Bucket-and-rollover math disappears on an unlimited or generous-bucket plan — and light users can drop to Tello at $25 with rollover on manual renew if unlimited is more than they need.
Step 1 — Check your phone is unlocked and compatible
- Phones bought from Tracfone or Straight Talk are sold locked to the brand. Whether yours can be unlocked depends on how much paid service it's had under Tracfone's unlocking policy — check your IMEI against that policy (on Tracfone's site or by calling) before counting on bringing the phone.
- A locked phone doesn't block the switch — it blocks the handset. Your number ports independently. If the phone isn't unlock-eligible yet, move the number to any unlocked phone you already own and let the Tracfone handset follow when it qualifies.
- Brought your own phone originally? Then its lock status belongs to wherever you bought it. Either way: dial *#06#, run the IMEI through the new carrier's checker, and trust that result.
Step 2 — Pick your cheaper plan
Online-first picks from our catalog, at finder prices:
Visible — Unlimited · $25/mo
Same Verizon towers your Tracfone line already uses: unlimited data, unlimited 5Mbps hotspot, eSIM activation in minutes. The default recommendation for Straight Talk switchers.
Total Wireless — STARTER · $35/mo with AutoPay
The upgraded sibling in the same Verizon family — unlimited data, 10GB hotspot and a 5-year price guarantee — but bought and activated fully online.
US Mobile — Unlimited Starter · $25/mo
70GB premium data (unlimited on AT&T) on your choice of Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T — pick Verizon to keep your current coverage, teleport later if you move.
Tello — Unlimited · $25/mo
On T-Mobile towers: 50GB at full 5G speed, build-your-own sizes and rollover on manual renew — for light users leaving per-bucket Tracfone plans behind.
Boost Mobile — Unlimited · $25/mo
On hybrid AT&T/T-Mobile coverage (AT&T primary for new activations, T-Mobile fallback) with a $25 forever price lock and no credit check — a simple like-for-like prepaid swap.

Step 3 — Get the three details Tracfone ports actually need
This is where Tracfone-family ports stall. Prepare all three before you start:
- Account number — it is NOT your phone number. For a Tracfone- or Straight Talk-branded phone, the account number is the phone's IMEI/MEID serial number (dial *#06#). If you brought your own phone with a BYOP SIM, it's the last 15 digits of the SIM card number instead. Not sure which one Tracfone has on file? Text FOUR to 611611 — you'll get the last four digits of the account number, which tells you whether it ends like your IMEI or your SIM.
- Number Transfer PIN — text NTP to 611611. From the line you're moving, text NTP to 611611 and you'll receive a 4-digit transfer PIN. Two warnings: if Line Lock is turned on for the line, no PIN can be issued until you turn it off — and the PIN expires in just 24–48 hours, the shortest window of any carrier in our guides. Request it at activation time, never in advance. (Straight Talk works the same way; its passcode is the Current Security PIN in your online account under Update Personal Profile — if that field is blank, set one before you port.)
- The ZIP code from activation day. The name and ZIP on the port must match Tracfone's records. If your current ZIP gets rejected, use the ZIP code from where you first activated the line — that's the mismatch behind most "invalid ZIP" rejections.
Step 4 — Activate and port (allow up to 24 hours)
- Order the new plan, choose "transfer my number," and enter the account number (IMEI or SIM digits), the fresh NTP PIN, and the matching ZIP.
- Keep the Tracfone/Straight Talk SIM in and the line active. Tracfone-family ports can take up to 24 hours — longer than the usual 10–30 minutes — and Tracfone may call the line to confirm you requested the transfer; answer and confirm.
- When the port completes, your old service ends at that moment. Activate the new eSIM/SIM and test call, text and data with Wi-Fi off.
- Data or MMS not working afterward? Tracfone-family APNs linger — set your new carrier's APN from our library and restart.
Timing it right
- Port near the end of your paid period — but before it expires. The moment your number transfers, your Tracfone service ends and any unused days or data are lost; there's no refund. But an already-expired line may not port at all and risks the number. The last day or two of paid service is the window.
- Request the NTP PIN last. With a 24–48-hour life, the PIN should be the final step before you submit the port — have the new plan ordered and the account number written down first.
- Don't stack a fresh refill on a line you're leaving. If your service end date is close, a one-month bridge is the most you should ever add — and only if you need it to keep the line alive for the port.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Entering your phone number as the account number — the #1 Tracfone port failure. It's the IMEI/MEID, or the last 15 digits of a BYOP SIM.
- Requesting the NTP PIN days early — it expires in 24–48 hours and Line Lock can block it entirely. Off first, text second, port immediately.
- The ZIP mismatch — if the port rejects on ZIP, it's almost always the activation ZIP Tracfone wants, not your current one.
- Cancelling or letting service lapse before the port — either can release the number for good.
- Missing Tracfone's confirmation call — if they call the line to verify the port-out and nobody confirms, the transfer can stall.
- Assuming the phone comes along automatically — branded phones are locked; verify unlock eligibility or bring a different handset for the number.
Your move: text FOUR to 611611 to identify your account number, order your new plan, then text NTP and port inside the PIN's short window — a day before your paid service ends. See exactly what you'd pay →
